4 Garage Upgrades to Consider

You might overlook your garage door, but it is a valuable part of your home. The garage door is one of the first things people see from the curb, and a damaged garage door can cause many issues. If you want to take your garage door to the next level to boost the value of your home or curb appeal, check out these four garage door upgrades to consider.

1. Upgrade Your Garage Door

One of the best ways you can boost both the appeal of your home and the security of your garage is by replacing an old garage door with a new one. This is especially important if your old garage door is damaged or from less desirable material like plywood. Criminals could easily break into the garage to gain access to the rest of your home.

A new garage door offers aesthetic and security benefits. If your main goal is security, stick with a solid wood or steel door. However, if you want an aesthetically pleasing garage door, consider one with windows or unique designs. Garage doors come in many other materials, including vinyl, faux wood, fiberglass, or glass.

2. Get a Smart System

Smart garage openers are a great addition to any home because they offer additional security features. One common problem with traditional openers is the frequency they use. Different openers use a different frequency. Ideally, this means only you can open the door. However, if someone happens to have a garage door on the same frequency, their opener could work for yours.

This is avoidable with a modern garage opener because it uses rolling code technology. This means that every time the garage door opener is used; a new code (out of over 1 billion combinations) is communicated to your devices for the next usage. Plus, even if the door does open without you realizing it, smart systems can alert you on your phone. As an added benefit, you don’t need to be within a certain range. With traditional garage door openers, the remote only works if you’re close to your home, but with a smart system, you can open and close the garage door from anywhere in the world.

3. Insulate Your Garage Door

If you choose some specific garage doors, you can add insulation to the middle. This serves many benefits. First, this keeps the garage naturally warmer and cooler. This means you can store more items in the garage without worrying about them experiencing damage from excess heat or cold. In addition, the rest of your house could benefit, especially if you have rooms above the garage, from energy savings. Adding weight to the garage door often requires upgrading your springs, so considering a new garage door that comes with insulation and new springs is a popular option.

In addition, insulated garage doors are quieter than non-insulated doors. This is great if you have noisy kids who play in the garage or loud projects you need to do in the garage. On the other hand, this keeps outside noise out if you want some quiet in the garage while you work.

Lastly, an insulated garage door is more durable than a non-insulated door. This makes it a more secure option, as it is harder to break into. It may also be more resistant to damage from wind, cars, or bikes.

4. Upgrade the Springs

If your door still uses extension springs, upgrade to torsion springs. As the name suggests, extension springs fully extend and contract to control the door’s movements. Torsion springs twist to control the door. As a result, torsion springs have many benefits over extension springs.

First, they are more durable and can last longer. They also allow the door to open smoother while putting less stress and strain on the opening system. Torsion springs also required fewer parts, which means less risk of parts breaking. Above all, torsion springs are much safer than extension springs because when they break, the broken coils are fixed to a shaft above the door and do not shoot across the garage like extension stretch springs that may have no safety cable running through the middle.

If you want to take your garage door to the next level, you have many ways to do so. One of the best ways to start is by replacing an old garage door with a sturdy and attractive one.
