5 Common Problems With Garage Door Openers

1. Dysfunctional Opener Switch

This problem can occur when the garage door opener does not receive power or the wiring between the wall switch and the garage door opener has a compromised connection. The first thing to do is to check the power source. Ensure the circuit breaker that supplies power to the garage door opener is intact.

If the power source is intact, the next step is to check the wiring between the wall switch and the garage door opener. Make sure that all connections are secure. If the wiring is correct, the wall switch may be defective and need replacement. If none of the above solutions fix the problem, the issue may be with the garage door opener itself and require a technician’s involvement.

2. Dysfunctional Remote Control

A dysfunctional remote control might have defective or tapped-out batteries. Ensure the garage door opener unit can receive power to rule out any issues with the keypad or opener switch.  If the door functions fine with the hardwired wall switch, the battery in the remote likely needs replacement.

Also, you may be out of range of the antenna inside the garage. Move closer to the door and try again. Ensure that the antenna on the motor unit is undamaged. If these solutions do not work, the remote control might need a new program since the delicate electronics in the remote control might lose their basic functionality.

3. No Activation

An unresponsive door can be the result of a broken trolley carriage. The trolley carriage is the mechanism that connects the garage door to the motor, which enables the door to move up and down. If the trolley carriage gets broken, the motor can still move the trolley, but the door will not open or close.

An inactive door can also result from dysfunctional or deactivated limits. This issue causes the motor to run, but the door doesn’t move, as it cannot complete its opening or closing cycle. Also, the garage door might get disconnected from the belt. A disconnected belt commonly happens when someone accidentally pulls the emergency release cord.

4. Noisy Garage Door

Squeaks can indicate that the rollers need lubrication or are worn out. Rattles can highlight that something has become loose. Pops can show a problem with the torsion spring, which may need lubrication or replacement. Finally, if your garage door opener makes a grinding noise but the door doesn’t move, the main drive gear may be toast and needs repairs.

5. Unsolicited Reversals

A garage door might reverse without an intended signal from the safety systems if the close-limit adjustment screw on the door opener motor is set too sensitively. This setting causes the opener to think the door has already reached the floor, even before it has, and the opener will reverse the door.

Additionally, damaged or rusted rollers create extra friction, which can fool the opener into stopping prematurely. Finally, objects that block the photo eye sensors might incorrectly assume that there are objects or people underneath the door, which activates its auto-reversal safety mechanism.

While this guideline offers basic diagnostic knowledge to garage door owners, you should never attempt to repair or replace damaged or worn-out parts yourself. Rely on a garage door technician that can offer more insight into the core problem and understand the best solution to fix and prevent further occurrences with the issue.
