Loud popping, screeching, grinding, clicking, squealing. Make it stop!

“Popping”, “clicking” and “squeaking” are just a few words customers use when describing their garage door. Sometimes it’s like nails going down a chalkboard. Ahhhhh! Such adjectives and analogies! Let’s get to the bottom of the what and whys….  The most common element would be the rollers. Either they are off track, rubbing against the track or just plain worn out. Anytime metal is on metal, there will be a sound. Not pretty.
Another element could be the door hardware. Loose or dry hinges, brackets or the tracks themselves can cause sounds.
Finally, the garage door opener could be the culprit of noise. Depending on whether it’s a chain, screw or belt drive will determine the “sounds” you’ll get as they travel down the rail while opening and closing the door.
Any way you look at it, there should be no “strange” sounds in the normal operation of your door and/or opener. These sounds are basically symptoms of a bigger problem in the works.   By  Nick McGregor , General Manager of  Plano Overhead Garage Door
