Which Garage Door Repairs are “DIY” and Which Aren’t?

Written by Nick McGregor. Posted in Do it Yourself Garage Door Repairs

Do it Yourself concept

There are three types of “do-ers” when it comes to projects around the house: (the most popular) Do It Yourself (DIY), Do It The Way I Want It, and Do It For Me.  And it’s ok; there’s no judgement of anyone who falls under any of these categories!  When it comes to garage doors, there are repairs that easily fall under DIY; however, there are some that are most definitely Do It For Me. (Please note, though, that there are also 3 levels of DIY’ers: Beginners, Confident and Very Confident, based on your experience and knowledge of both tools and garage door parts. Please know which level of DIY’er you are before tackling any repairs.

“DIY” repairs:

  • Tighten and inspect all hardware (hinges, brackets, etc).
  • Lubricating with lithium/silicone.
  • Clean and test infrared safety sensors
  • Replacing stiles, struts, weather strips, and perimeter seals
  • Replacing lightbulbs and batteries for opener, remotes, keypads

Do It The Way I Want It” repairs:

  • I’m moving soon and just need a basic repair
  • I’ll be purchasing a new door and/or opener very soon and just need a “band-aid” or temporary fix

“Do It For Me”, the most important category and the most “dangerous” repairs for non-professionals:

  • Changing out broken springs
  • Replacing cables and drums
  • Replacing/repairing garage door tracks and top bracing
  • Replacing top or bottom corner brackets
  • Replacing garage door panels

(NOTE: These repairs should ONLY be performed by trained professionals.)

No matter the “category” you fall under, Plano Overhead Garage Door is always willing to assist with ANY of your garage door and opener needs.  Please contact us today to schedule a same-day service or on a day of your convenience.

Top 5 Garage Door Maintenance Tips You Can Do Yourself

Written by Nick McGregor. Posted in About Our Different Garage Door Services in Plano, TX, Garage Door Maintenance in Plano, TX, Paint Your Garage Door in Plano, TX

Do it Yourself concept

You like to push up your sleeves and fix things yourself. At Plano Overhead Garage Door, we want to teach you how to maintain your formidable, new garage door. Read on to learn how you can perform DIY garage door maintenance in North Dallas, TX and keep your garage door in tip-top shape for the long-term.

Top Five DIY Garage Door Repairs

You have the power to stop problems before they start. With regular upkeep, you’ll prevent major functional problems from occurring with your garage door. Use the tips below to complete DIY maintenance for your Plano, TX garage door.

1. Inspect.

Perhaps the most important thing you can do in terms of garage door upkeep is to pay attention. Pick a time once a month to perform a routine checkup of every part of your garage door, including the rollers, panels, and tracks. Listen for popping, squeaking, and grinding noises as the garage door opens and closes. Look closely at each garage door panel to see if there is any deterioration or damage. Do not attempt to replace the rollers or spring system. For those issues, be sure to call a repair technician.

2. Paint

Texas sees a lot of weather. Rain, thunderstorms, high winds, and hail slowly can chip away at the integrity of your garage door. As you perform your monthly inspection of your garage door, look for scratches and chips on each panel’s surface. If you discover this kind of damage, paint over them so that the chips and scratches don’t grow and start to rust.

3. Clean

Especially after storms, hose off your garage door panels. It will help to prevent damage to the door. Even more importantly, clean the rollers and tracks. Debris can get stuck in the tracks, and prevent the rollers from sliding. This will stop the garage door from opening and closing easily. After you remove debris, take a clean rag and wipe down all the rollers and tracks.

4. Lubricate

Spraying lubricant helps the garage door’s rollers slide easily along the tracks. Make sure to apply lubricants to panel hinges, springs, and torsion tube bearings. Lightly lubricate. Over-applying lubricant will have an adverse effect, so clean off any excess.

5. Tighten

Garage doors include a lot of hardware. Over time, hardware begins to loosen. Panel hinges, rollers, tracks, garage door opener attachments, and the ceiling attachments should not be loose. If they are, tighten them immediately.
