Garage Storage Trends in Plano, TX

Written by Nick McGregor. Posted in Attached & Detached Garages in Plano, TX, Garage Organization in Plano, TX

Full Garage 2

Garages are not made just for parking your cars anymore!

It has always amazed me how so many people would rather get in and out of their cars in the rain, snow, sleet, and heat out in their driveways, than to enjoy the overhead protection, shade, and convenience of getting in and out of the car in the garage!

 Supporting claims

53% of households in the United Kingdom have access to a garage, whereas only 24% of them use the space for parking their car. However, 82% of homes in the United States have two-car garages or larger, but only 15% use them to park the car inside. Lately, I’ve been noticing it’s also been getting worse. More and more are choosing to NOT take full advantage of their garages and use them for the purpose for which they were intended-TO PARK YOUR CARS IN!

Extra storage space- Practical or not?

When people move into a new home that’s equipped with a 1- or 2-car garage, most likely their intensions are good. Most see whether or not they will have enough space in the garage to fit their personal, specific vehicles. When in reality, most cases prove that after the big move in date, the unpacking of the junk in the garage never really leaves. It just keeps collecting. They’ll use the garage as “extra storage space”.

 Full Garage

Too much stuff

The problem is that it just becomes easier and easier to keep adding stuff inside the garage every time they buy more things… or they simply don’t have any other place inside the house itself to keep all the extra “junk” that has now accumulated in their lives.  Aside from the bike, lawn mowers, and tools, and such, if you don’t need to use something regularly, then it’s probably not worth really keeping around anyway, right? Storing in the garage is like storage place just before it makes its way to the trash or the donation center anyways!  A good theory to go by is, for every one new thing you buy, get rid of one thing. With this, there will be some kind of constant balance.

We would like to think if we have a garage, we should be able to use it accurately and for what it’s actually intended for. Clearing out all the junk and using your garage for the purpose it was intended will prevent a large amount of offenses that also include getting stuck in uncomfortable bi-polar Texas weather!

Organizing Your Garage in Plano, TX

Written by Nick McGregor. Posted in Attached & Detached Garages in Plano, TX, Garage Organization in Plano, TX, Misc. Garage Door Information in Plano, TX

Bring drab to fab!

It’s time to start getting prepared for spring and planning for warmer weather, but what we all forget to think about are the many different priorities that spring brings.

What we forget to think about

We forget that our spring cleaning is needed to get us prepared for warmer weather. As the first room that most homeowners see at the beginning and end of every workday, giving the garage a facelift can be a great way to update your home the right way.

Garage sale status

With warmer weather in store for us here in north Texas, picking a pleasant sunny afternoon to pull everything out of the garage and take inventory of the things we no longer use or need, makes for a perfect day to have a garage sale! There’s a good rule of thumb for whether or not you could move things into your garage sale pile or not. If you have duplicates or items you haven’t used in at least three years, it would be the perfect time to release, let go, and make some fast cash!

Organized Garage

Purge the junk

Do you have items that could possibly be harmful to humans or nature items, or things that could be recycled? Car batteries, old mower gas, or insecticides all could be disposed of properly, relieving some space in your garage.

Zone your space

With having more space in your garage, you now can try to visualize where your bigger things may fit, whether it may be your mower or a workbench. Yard tools, mops, or anything else you may use or need on a regular basis, you can now have designated areas for them. Now you may be able to hang pegboard for small tools, and metal reels for hoses and cords.

Spring cleaning is always fun, at least when you’re done! Now you can invite the pals over and make sure they’re jealous of your organization skills!!!

Attached & Detached Garages in Plano, TX

c-res-slide02 (1)When it comes to being a homeowner, there are a lot of details and specifics that you have to take on before you can move forward with anything that could be a life altering decision that you will have to potentially end up spending a fortune to renovate something different. Thinking about a house renovation or new home build can be stressful and time consuming. Here are a few simple points to assist your decision when it comes to figuring out whether to go with an attached garage or a non-attached garage.

Detached Garages

What are the purposes and intentions for your garage? Detached garages can come to use for many homeowners that have a big lot type. Even though a detached can swallow up an enormous chunk of your existing yard, if you’re looking to start a work shop or auto shop that you have always dreamed about, then a detached version can offer you more space privacy, and also will limit noise for your neighbors and people in the house than a garage that’s directly attached. In the end, attached models can prevent safety hazards if you will be storing a lot of fuel, oil and other materials that put off harmful fumes. You would not have to worry about those chemicals leaking into your home with a detached garage model.

Attached Garages

Attached models are relatively new in the world of homebuilding. An attached garage unit is really just a large home addition which will be adding quite a bit to your structure. Some people also consider avoiding having to trump through rain and snow to get to your vehicle on intemperate mornings, and we all know here in Texas, weather can shock and surprise us when we least expect it to. Ultimately, if that’s the main concern, then an attached garage with direct access to your home is undeniably the way to go.

Your plan can consist of three important things in your plan: security, storage, and building.

Securities between attached and detached both have their own issues, but presumably, you are building this garage to put processions of value in it. Whether it’s classic cars, electronics, motorcycles, or anything else of value, make sure everything is protected.

Whether it’s, cabinets, shelving or overhead storage, your plans may be to have this space be a workshop or office, but guarantee to start storing things in it because it will be empty. Make sure to plan ahead for organizing the stuff that will appear once your garage is built.  It is also important to keep in mind that there is no such thing as too much room.  Over 75% of the homes that we go to in the Dallas area are more than 3/4 full of vehicles and/or storage, and almost every customer mentions the fact that they wish they had one more cars worth of garage space.

When planning on the final layout and build of the space, remember, even if you aren’t planning on using this as a living space, it is much easier and cheaper to insulate during the build than to figure out later that you need  A/C or a heat component in there. If you are not certain that this will be livable space, opt for the least expensive insulation option.

Take a look at these reasons that are either for or against your needs when it comes to these two common designs to help you decide which common style is best suited for your needs.

Why You Need Garage Door Weatherseal in Plano, TX

Written by Nick McGregor. Posted in Attached & Detached Garages in Plano, TX, Make Your Plano, TX, Garage Eco-Friendly, Plano, TX, Insulated Garage Door

Money Blowing Through Garage Cracks

With the winter months upon us it is more important than any other time of the year to have a properly sealed garage door opening. This can be the difference between 10 to 15 degrees in temperature in the garage. It can also greatly reduce bugs and wasp nests that have free access to your garage. A properly sealed garage door will not only have a rubber seal that meets the concrete, but will also have a seal that is mounted to the cased opening to seal the top and both sides of your door. This is a very inexpensive way to combat the cold weather.

Perimeter Seal

So say goodbye to the rodents and bugs, and hello to a nicely sealed garage door opening.  Call today to learn more about having your garage sealed!  972-422-1695

Garage of the Future in Plano, TX

Written by Nick McGregor. Posted in Attached & Detached Garages in Plano, TX, Make Your Plano, TX, Garage Eco-Friendly, Plano, TX, Garage Door Technology

What does your garage do for you?

Chances are, it’s a good storage place, workplace, and a spot to park your car. Sure, you possibly get a new garage door replacement now and then or let your children hang out there, but what if your garage could charge your car without increasing your electric bill and simultaneously grow plants?

Eco Garage

Well, interestingly enough, that’s exactly what a group of students at the Green Mountain College in Vermont, strive to find out. With the idea in mind to make a garage more useful and more helpful in a self-sustaining household, they set to work building a garage that does more for you than just a place for storage… garage of the future!

The garage, while still in development, is designed to harvest solar energy and use it to charge electric vehicles. It has 16 solar panels at 3.86 kilowatts each positioned on a sloping roof to maximize the energy collection. In addition to the energy production, the garage includes a greenhouse which grows plants effectively enough to look promising for some self-sustaining food production. The passive design combined with the solar panels makes it a successful green building project.

Why a Garage?

Eco Garage Green Grass Icon

Most garages aren’t used for more than just additional space. The objective of the students is to take a part of a home that serves a decent purpose and turn it into one that does so much more. The want to demonstrate that using solar energy this way can be less expensive over-all and create a reusable resource attached to any house.  If you’re thinking about going green, why not start with your garage?
