Garage of the Future in Plano, TX

Written by Nick McGregor. Posted in Attached & Detached Garages in Plano, TX, Make Your Plano, TX, Garage Eco-Friendly, Plano, TX, Garage Door Technology

What does your garage do for you?

Chances are, it’s a good storage place, workplace, and a spot to park your car. Sure, you possibly get a new garage door replacement now and then or let your children hang out there, but what if your garage could charge your car without increasing your electric bill and simultaneously grow plants?

Eco Garage

Well, interestingly enough, that’s exactly what a group of students at the Green Mountain College in Vermont, strive to find out. With the idea in mind to make a garage more useful and more helpful in a self-sustaining household, they set to work building a garage that does more for you than just a place for storage… garage of the future!

The garage, while still in development, is designed to harvest solar energy and use it to charge electric vehicles. It has 16 solar panels at 3.86 kilowatts each positioned on a sloping roof to maximize the energy collection. In addition to the energy production, the garage includes a greenhouse which grows plants effectively enough to look promising for some self-sustaining food production. The passive design combined with the solar panels makes it a successful green building project.

Why a Garage?

Most garages aren’t used for more than just additional space. The objective of the students is to take a part of a home that serves a decent purpose and turn it into one that does so much more. The want to demonstrate that using solar energy this way can be less expensive over-all and create a reusable resource attached to any house.  If you’re thinking about going green, why not start with your garage?

Garage Door Openers in Plano, TX: Luxury or Necessity?

Written by Nick McGregor. Posted in Garage Door Openers in Plano, TX, Garage Door Safety in Plano, TX, Plano, TX, Garage Door Technology

Safety Sensor Liability

Safety Beam

If your garage door does not have safety photo eyes at the bottom corners of the garage door, then your garage door opener is no longer in accordance with Federal Law.  In 1993, President Clinton’s administration mandated that all garage door openers be installed with safety reversing sensors.  Most garage door repair companies either refuse to work on these older openers, or refuse to put a warranty on any work performed on them.  Not having updated safety mechanisms is a very dangerous liability in your own home.

Replacement Part Dilemma

Also, the top manufacturer of garage door openers in the world – Liftmaster- has stopped producing ANY replacement parts for garage door openers that were manufactured before 1993.  All other manufacturers are following their initiative.  Time flies, but it’s been over 20 YEARS since these garage door openers were produced!

So how do we answer our original question?

The garage door opener is a necessity to almost all of us, therefore we should treat it as a luxury.  You never know when an appliance is going to give up on you, and there’s nothing worse than feeling trapped at home or being locked out.  We spend thousands of dollars replacing or upgrading cellphones and televisions, but often run our garage door openers until they quit altogether.

Go outside and take a look at that old garage door opener, wouldn’t it be nice to upgrade it?  Wouldn’t a quiet belt drive, a battery backup system, wireless phone control from the office, knowing the time and temperature, and having a safety reverse system be worth the investment?  Come by our showroom see what a garage door opener is supposed to look like!

821LM Universal Smartphone Garage Door Controller

The 821LM Universal Garage Door Control is the newest release from Liftmaster. Compatible with most major brands of garage door openers that have photo eyes or safety sensors, the 821LM is set to enable a more mainstream occurrence of wireless garage door monitoring and operation.  This retro-fit universal kit contains Wi-Fi and built-in MyQ technology.  The 821LM box contains a Wi-Fi hub and a garage door sensor in order to convert an existing garage door opener to the patented MyQ technology to allow wireless connectivity.

You might not have realized it, but garage door openers just got a heck of a lot smarter.  As part of the home automation movement, garage door openers now have technology that allows them to be controlled from any internet device from anywhere in the world.  The Liftmaster 821LM Universal Garage Door Control has simply revolutionized the ability to control your garage door opener.

MyQ Options

Previously, consumers were forced to purchase specific models of garage door openers- such as the Liftmaster 8550- in order to ensure compatibility with the new myQ technology and the accompanied 828LM Liftmaster internet gateway.  Then, a wall console (the 888LM) was introduced by Liftmaster in order to convert older models into tech savvy machines.  Both of these options are still available, and useful; however the newest product to be released has broadened the horizon for tech lovers everywhere.

With MyQ technology, easy setup, and a free downloadable MyQ mobile app; it appears that the future of garage door openers is truly upon us.  There are now at least three different ways to enable your garage door opener to be controlled from your laptop at work, or your iPhone while you’re on vacation.
