When Do I Need 2 Springs?

Written by Nick McGregor. Posted in Get Your Torsion Springs in Plano, TX, Learn More About Garage Door Springs in Plano, TX

It’s 7 am and you’re leaving for work.  You open the garage door and hear a loud “BOOM”! Your door has dropped back to the ground hard, possibly even lop-sided, and you cannot open it no matter how hard you try.  Your two car garage door only had one spring, and now the garage door is just dead weight.  You quickly realize that the garage door opener doesn’t actually do the legwork, the springs do (the opener just GUIDES the garage door)!  So now you’re stuck and can’t get your vehicle out.  Hope you weren’t rushing out for an early meeting!

Advantages of 2 Springs

With 2 springs on your garage door, only one of them breaks 99% of the time.  Most garage doors will still open if only one of the two springs is broken.  The garage door opener works twice as hard, but the garage door normally opens (possibly with a helping hand) at least once so that you can get your car out and make it to work.  Be sure to call us as soon as possible though, as your garage door opener will likely be damaged with continued use.  The second spring usually breaks within a few days of the first one- especially once it’s doing double the work that it was intended.

Spring Broken

Why Was There Only 1 Spring Before?

Most home builders cut corners in one area to make other areas of the home more appealing.  Unfortunately, the garage door is an area of where they cut expenses by installing only one torsion spring on a standard 16’x7′ garage door when there really should be two. Even though the door will function, having only one spring places unnecessary wear and unbalance to the door which, over time, causes the spring to break due to over-use.

Can I Just Weld It?

Due to safety issues, springs should be replaced and not repaired.  The springs’ purpose is to carry the weight of the door while it’s being opened or closed. Garage doors can weigh up to several hundred pounds, depending on the size, style and material of the door.  Welding the spring back together is a cheap fix, but it is very dangerous and is often a temporary fix since the remainder of the coils on the spring are just as worn down as the point that broke.

Our Suggestion

Upgrade to two springs, find the best price associated with the best warranty, and find a company that can do it the same day.  We offer all of these things and would love the opportunity to earn your business!

Garage Door Torsion Springs

Spring comparisson (2)Here at Plano Overhead Garage Door, we really stand by the torsion springs that we install on your garage door. The springs that we use are 34” commercial grade springs that are made of galvanized, rust inhibitive wire. These springs also rated for 15,000 to 30,000 life cycles. In other words, they last for about 10-15 years in most cases.

Pricing

Depending on the size of door you have and how many springs, really determines the price. Our pricing includes tax, labor, trip charge and everything included for an upfront pricing. Also our company runs coupons on the internet for our torsion spring price. Not only do we have coupons, we will price match guarantee our competitors if they offer the same quality and discounts that we have on our springs and labor. We want to earn your business, so always make sure you call us back before going with someone else.

Over the Counter

Our company also sales these torsion springs over the counter. We don’t recommend doing this project yourself if you never have because it is an extremely dangerous task. If you do know how to install these springs yourself we have the torsion springs you will need. All we need to know when you come in would be what your door is made out of, if it’s a two car garage or a single car garage and if the door is insulated or non-insulated. There is no warranty on the springs bought in our showroom.

Why our Torsion Springs?

As you can see there are many reasons why our Torsion Springs are better than our competition. Not just the warranty, but the actual product itself is more durable and long lasting. So next time your garage door Torsion Spring breaks just remember who you should call to fix it!

Differences Between Torsion and Extension Springs in Plano, TX

Written by Nick McGregor. Posted in Get Your Torsion Springs in Plano, TX, Learn More About Garage Door Springs in Plano, TX

There are two different kinds of garage door springs. Torsion springs, and extension springs, also known as “stretch springs”.

Galvanized Spring

Torsion Springs

Torsion springs are wound-up on a rod above the garage door opening, which in normal cases, there are a pair of them, one on each side of the center of the door. When one breaks the other spring will soon break, not far along after the first. So it’s safe to save money for another service call and have both replaced at once when the first breaks. Torsion springs are located on a long steel shaft that connects all of the cables, bearings, and mounting plates into one working system.

Bad-Extension-Spring

Extension Springs

The other kind of springs are the kind that run along the upper, right and left door tracks and extend and stretch to do their job. These are known as extension springs, “stretch springs”. Stretch springs are not as difficult or risky to repair yourself at home; however safety measures are in order. When these springs are extended while the door is down, they are stretched to potentially send deadly force, possibly lifting a 400 pound door. Stretch springs, or extension springs, were commonly used before torsion springs were invented. There are a few retailers (Home Depot, etc.) that provide stretch springs with their garage doors, but this is considered laughable by industry standards. Even builders do not install these types of springs. The garage door often lifts unevenly on either side, and if the garage door has an attached garage door opener; you are going to have problems sooner rather than later. This is why most customers opt to go with a torsion conversion.

Lubrication is a Garage Door Springs’ Best Friend!

With now knowing that the springs over a garage door are clearly not a DIY project, we here at Plano Overhead Garage Door, suggest that you generously spray any new springs with a coat of 3-in-One Garage Door Lube to prevent the corrosion that is the starting point for springs failure. This is really the only thing a homeowner should do when it comes to either type of spring system.

Do-it-yourself?

Any type of spring can be deadly. Don’t mistake this as a do-it-yourself project, it is highly recommended to take careful safety precautions. We have had customers that had to have surgery, stitches, and wrist braces after failed attempts to do it themselves. It is safe to say, skydiving is safer; leave the replacement of springs to us! Here at Plano Overhead Garage door, we will have y’all covered indefinitely!

Torsion Spring Conversion, Torquemaster Gone Wrong in Plano, TX

Written by Nick McGregor. Posted in Get Your Torsion Springs in Plano, TX, Torsion Spring Conversions in Plano, TX

We had a customer call in this week that stated that he was in desperate need of service. He let it be known that his doors do not open and close evenly, and walks back and forth as it opens and closes. Right away, we quickly looked in our system for previous work done, but just as we predicted, we have not been to their location. We proceeded to tell him the cause of his problem, and it was essential for us to send one of our highly experienced technicians to his residence.

What is a Torsion Spring Conversion?

Come to find out, the customer had a unique system that operates his garage door that requires a complete overhaul of the lifting mechanics of the garage door.  We replace Wayne Dalton Torquemaster systems every time we see them.  The parts are mostly plastic, their durability is questionable, and in our opinion they are dangerous for customers to have on their home.

A torsion conversion requires a handful of new parts, which we carry on all of our technicians’ trucks. It requires the torsion spring and the torsion shaft that the spring mounts onto. It also requires a set of right and left end bearing plates that hold the ends of the torsion tube, as well as a center bearing plate that the spring mounts to and holds to the wall. The only other parts needed are a set of cables which lift the door and wrap around a set of cable drums, that are the last item required.

We do a lot of torsion spring conversions for people that have other types of garage door spring systems. If you have any questions about the benefits of converting to a torsion spring system for your garage door, or if you would like for one of our technicians to come to your home to outfit your garage door with this type of system, please contact us!

A customer called Plano Overhead Garage Door in a panic because their car was stuck in their garage and they didn’t know what to do. Through process of elimination we were able to determine that the customer’s torsion spring was broken. When the torsion springs break you are unable to open your garage door.

The technician went to the customer’s home in Allen and explained to them that over time, with wear and tear, torsion springs will eventually break. The technician continued to explain that we offer a lifetime warranty on our springs, so that way next time when the customer’s springs break she won’t have to pay for the part. Our technician was able to complete this task in under an hour and the customer was able to use their door again after we were done.

Fixing a broken spring is extremely dangerous, but as long as it is done by a professional; it is a painless process.
